Cierra Bender

Ship sophomore Cierra Bender’s 210 strikeouts in 2021 are the most for a Greyhound pitcher in a single season on record, eclipsing the mark of 207 set by Lauren Plasterer in 2005.

Greyhound softball’s District 3 Class 5A opening round win last week against Mechanicsburg meant a pair of long road trips and games against a pair of top-seeded opponents in Twin Valley and Daniel Boone.

The No. 9 seeded Greyhounds (16-7) lost a quarterfinal matchup against No. 1 seed Twin Valley (21-1) Thursday on the road, 6-0. Shippensburg then brought the potential tying run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning of their consolation semifinal contest against No. 4 seed Daniel Boone (18-4) Tuesday, but were unable to complete the comeback, falling to the Blazers by an 8-5 final score.
