Flag Football

Newville First Church of God has announced the start of a new youth flag football program for area girls and boys, ages 10-16, that will begin Sept. 11, and run through Oct. 30. The amateur-level flag football program will take place Saturday mornings at the church, located at 475 Shippensburg Road in Newville.

Connection Youth Flag Football is a co-ed, five-on-five flag football program the church is establishing as a way for local youth to participate in an organized amateur sports activity.

“The great thing about this type of youth flag football is that you only need a desire to try,” said Brian Fickel, the CYFF program coordinator at Newville First Church of God.

Fickel got the idea to run a youth flag football program in the spring of 2020 after his son’s youth flag football program was canceled due to COVID-19.

“I coached my son’s flag football team for several years and hated to see him miss out, so we set up and ran our own league in my backyard that spring and it was successful, so we ran it an additional season,” Fickel said. “It was great to see so many first-time boys and girls give it a try and fall in love with the sport.”

Newville First Church of God adopted the program Fickel started in his backyard and is now offering it at its church facilities. The church is eager to provide a fun, low-cost amateur sports program to area youth.

Registration on the church website for the fall season runs through Aug. 30. Any girl or boy ages 10-16 can register. Exceptions can be made for children who are almost 10 years old. A small registration fee covers the cost of a T-shirt and supplies, and will be collected on opening day, Sept. 11. The church is also looking for any parents who would like to volunteer as coaches or referees.

Games will take place at the church beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday mornings and run through lunch, depending on the child’s game schedule.
