Errol V. Coy Jr., 87, of Rainsville, Alabama, passed away quietly in his sleep on Monday, Oct. 18, 2021, in the Huntsville Hospital in Huntsville, Alabama, of a COVID-related illness with complications of Alzheimer’s. 

He was born at home near Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, on Feb. 3, 1934, a son of the late Errol V. Coy Sr. and Curvey Mae Stine Coy.

Errol was a 1952 graduate of Shippensburg High School, and was employed at Letterkenny Ordnance Depot from 1952, until his retirement on Feb. 3, 1986. 

Following Errol’s retirement from Letterkenny, he enjoyed traveling with his wife, Shirley, in their motorhome to Alaska and many other states in the United States. They also vacationed in Hawaii.

For some time, Errol bought and renovated homes in Tennessee, Florida and Alabama. Finally settling in Rainsville, Alabama.

Errol’s interests were varied. He enjoyed playing baseball and softball for many years with teams from Cleversburg, Pennsylvania. He was a jogger, covering long distances, and later a walker, until recently. He was an avid Sudoku and crossword puzzle solver.

Errol is survived by his wife, Shirley Coy, of 37 years; and the following children: Gregory (Kathy) Coy, Joanne Coy (Richard) Bard, and Michael Coy, all of Shippensburg; and the following stepchildren: Linda Williams and Peter (DeRinda) Knipp of Alabama.

Errol was the oldest of 13 children. He is survived by the following brothers and sisters: Felicia Coy Stevens of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, Clark (Linda) Coy, Nancy Coy (Eber Sr.) Leisher, Charles (Betty) Coy, Richard (Arlene) Coy Sr., Edgar (Joan) Coy I, Daniel (Kathy) Coy Sr., all of Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, and Linda Coy (Ray Sr.) Plasterer of Middletown, Pennsylvania.

He was preceded in death by the following brothers: Wilson, Gerald, Wilbur and Dalton Coy.

Errol was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Eutzy Coy, the mother of his children. He was also preceded in death by his stepdaughter, Sharon Knipp Bigler. 

Errol is survived by six grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandsons; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Errol was of the Protestant faith, and has been a member of the Cleversburg EUB Church for many years while living in the Shippensburg area.

Final arrangements are in charge of Berryhill Funeral Home in Huntsville, Alabama.
