Charlie Shannon

Charlie Shannon of Newburg recently built this replica of the Ramp Covered Bridge in Newburg, made with scrap wood from the original bridge.

Charlie Shannon of Newburg spent 45 years of his life working at Domestic Castings in Shippensburg where he crafted the fine art of making patterns and doing repair work. He has always been intrigued with building and creating things, anything. Woodworking naturally fit into his creative way of thinking.

When the Ramp Covered Bridge in Hopewell Township was being refurbished last year, Shannon, who lives just a short distance from the bridge, decided to visit the site and take a look at the historic structure during the early stages of the project. Each time he did, he walked away with the same thought in mind: “I think I can build a bridge like this!”
