Newburg Sign

This marker that sits along Route 696 as you enter Newburg depicts the age of the town and the borough. This year marks the 160th anniversary of Newburg being incorporated into a borough in 1861.

The start of a new year is often a time when small towns and municipalities, big boroughs and townships and other government agencies roll up their sleeves, and get to work on a new set of goals and ideas for the respective communities in which they serve. The small town of Newburg is no different. However, this year will be a little different for the small Cumberland County town in that 2021 marks the 160th anniversary of Newburg’s incorporation into a borough. To help mark this special milestone, residents of both the borough and Hopewell Township are planning to host a celebration that will carry on throughout the year.

According to the town marker, Newburg was named for Newburg, Germany, and founded in 1826, making the town itself 195 years old. Newburg was incorporated into a borough on April 17, 1861. The first planning meeting to help organize the year-long celebration is slated for 6 this evening, Jan. 14, at the Old Firehouse located on North High Street.
