Penny Wars

Shippensburg Area Middle School Student Council Members Xandria Duignan and Landon Eichelberger hold checks for the Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter and Better Days Animal League from money students raised during Penny Wars.

Buckets and buckets of coins, and much-needed funds for rescued animals were the result of a friendly competition that pitted Shippensburg Area Middle School classes against one another.

Students in 6th, 7th and 8th grade participated in Penny Wars for two weeks -- from May 17 to 28 -- and raised a whopping $2,913.40. Krystal Johnson, SAMS Student Council Adviser, said she counted every single coin -- 66,213 -- the students collected, and took the change to Members 1st Federal Credit Union’s counting machine in five trips.
