At the beginning of a new year, we humans are prone to conduct reviews of the annum that just ended. Surely there are lots of reasons that we do this, but I won’t pretend to know what they are.

Instead let’s just take a look back at our accomplishments, failures, continuing quandaries, regrets, and nobody gives a hoot(s).

Happily, I can say that I piled up plenty of accomplishments in 2021. Got through the year without contracting COVID. Also made it through the year without a smartphone.

As far as failures go, I did not fly to space on a billionaire’s spaceship. Nor did I write a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, star in an Oscar-winning movie, get elected to Congress, take part in a government insurrection, score a free burger at any fast-food establishment, or win more than a free ticket in the state lottery, not that I didn’t try with the lottery thing. I still fail to understand the appeal of Ed Sheeran or why people are fascinated by the Kardashians.

Under the “don’t give a hoot” heading, I must admit I don’t care what Kanye calls himself or why he thinks it matters to the general public.

In the “continuing quandaries” classification, I won’t lose a wink of sleep pondering the possibility that something called Sasquatch, Yeti, Bigfoot, Stinkfoot, or Romeo lives in the forests of Pennsylvania (or Alaska, West Virginia or any other place). I’m constantly puzzled as to why folks go out looking for such a critter.

I regret that in 2021 I allowed myself to be cajoled into baking a thousand Christmas cookies. I solemnly swear that this will never happen again.

Truth be told, I sorta, kinda did make a resolution, but it was made at the beginning of December and I truly intend to keep up with this one. I promised myself that I will read the books that I’ve bought over the years with all good intentions, yet they remain on the shelf collecting dust. So far, two have been crossed off the “not yet read” list. I’m still basking in the glory of that success.

The “waste not, want not” promise to self was a type of resolution, too, and that was made months ago. Aside from the Christmas cookies that are morphing into rocks as this is written, that resolution-ish vow is still in effect.

Just let me add the two above-mentioned items to the list of accomplishments.

Heck, I’m feeling good about this new year already!
