Newville Post 421 was officially eliminated from the Cumberland County American Legion playoff race with a loss in their season finale July 8 at Dillsburg, 5-0.
Dillsburg pitchers Nick Yinger and Tanner Merovich combined to shutdown the Newville offense, holding them to just three hits and not allowing a run.
Yinger, the Dillsburg starter, was efficient in his five innings, recording three strikeouts and zero walks. Moerovich had to work around a pair of free passes in the seventh, but did not allow a hit over the final two frames.
A pair of Newville errors allowed Dillsburg to jump ahead with a run in the bottom of the first. A great play by center fielder Zach Garlin – throwing a strike to home plate on a single from Merovich – cut down what would have been a second run.
Dillsburg tacked on two more runs in the third, and Merovich clubbed a two-run home run in the fifth to round out the scoring.
Newville starter Luke Michaels was charged with 5 runs (4 earned) over five innings of work. Tyler Koser pitched a scoreless inning of relief.
Michaels’ second inning single, Jonathan Miller’s third inning single, and Jarrett Goodyear’s fourth inning double registered as Newville's only hits.
Newville finishes the 2019 legion baseball season with a 5-7-1 overall record. Dillsburg advances to the Cumberland County American Legion playoffs as the top overall seed with a record of 11-2.
