The small town of Walnut Bottom will celebrate its 200th birthday on Sept. 21, with many events and activities planned. Walnut Bottom was named for a grove of walnut trees located in the southwest corner of Cumberland County in the year 1819, and sits in South Newton Township.
Since the founding of Walnut Bottom, it established a post office in 1850, which currently is located on Maple Avenue. A fire department was organized in 1976, which recently celebrated its 40th anniversary and is currently located on Firehouse Road. The town is also home to several businesses, Trinity United Methodist Church and a population of about 500.
