Pine Grove School

The Pine Grove School in Mowersville is pictured here. Jake Crider has recounted his days at the one-room schoolhouse in this several-part series.

Editor’s note: This account is reprinted with permission from the September newsletter of the Shippensburg Historical Society. Jake Crider and his family lived at Maclay’s Mill along the Conodoguinet Creek, and he attended The Pine Grove School in the village of Mowersville. Crider attended school there for grades 1-8 and he regularly waxes nostalgic about those days. These memories are a favorite of his and his recollections are vivid. We enjoy reading Crider’s accounts and the memories of others, and hope our readers do, too.

According to the speedometer on our family car, it was 1 and a half miles from our driveway to the Pine Grove one-room brick schoolhouse at Mowersville, Pennsylvania. We traveled on three different roadways to get there. Leaving our driveway, we had a gravel roadbed for about 1/8th of a mile when it intersected with a macadam surfaced roadway for about 1-1/4 miles then we turned left onto another gravel roadbed for about 1/8 of a mile.
