Robert E. Gilbert, 75, of Newville, passed away on Thursday, June 6, 2019, at UPMC Pinnacle-Carlisle.
He was born on Dec. 30, 1943, in Newville, and was a son of the late William Gilbert Sr. and Mildred (Noaker) Gilbert.
Bob attended Big Spring High School and received his G.E.D. while serving in the United States Marine Corps.
He was a Vietnam veteran and served one tour of duty. He worked for the former Fickes Silo Co., Newville, for more than 30 years. He then worked for Funk’s Well Drilling and retired from Blue Mountain Excavating Co.
Bob was a member of the Newville Friendship Fire Co., American Legion Post 421-Newville, American Legion Post 101-Carlisle, AMVETS-Carlisle, VFW-Carlisle, Lewis B. Puller Jr. Marine Corps League Detachment 524-Carlisle, PA Department of Marine Corps League, Devil Dog Pound 132-Chambersburg and the Edward Jay Rykoskey Post 1-Carlisle.
He was the co-coordinator for Toys for Tots of Cumberland County. Bob was involved in many activities for his community.
He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Patricia (Line) Gilbert; two sons, Clinton Gilbert and Craig Gilbert, both of Newville; one daughter, Heather (husband, John) O’Donnell of Carlisle; three brothers, Lester of Elizabethtown, Jerry of Newville and Bill of Mechanicsburg; four sisters, Helen Hahn of Carlisle, Donna Rae Stouffer of Newville, Lois Burkholder of Newville and Carol Jumper of Carlisle; three stepsons, Ron (wife, Lynne) Kutz of Texas, John (wife, Sherisa) Kutz of Tennessee, and Ralph “Skip” Reed Jr. of Colorado; 19 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard and Larry Gilbert; and one granddaughter, Shawn Kutz.
Funeral services will begin at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 13, 2019, in the Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, 630 S. Hanover St., Carlisle, with Pastor J.R. Wells officiating.
Burial with military honors will be in Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens, Carlisle.
A viewing will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 12, 2019, and one hour prior to the service Thursday, in the funeral home.
Memorial contributions in Bob’s name may be made to the Lewis B. Puller Jr. Detachment 524, P.O. Box 1078, Carlisle, Pa. 17013, to benefit the Scholarship Fund.
