In May, Jo Anne Coy committed a significant pledge to the Shippensburg Public Library, meeting the requirements to rename it. It was Jo Anne’s intention to rename the library the Jeffrey W. Coy Public Library of Shippensburg to honor her late husband.
At the June meeting of the Shippensburg Public Library Board of Trustees, the board unanimously voted to amend the renaming to include Jo Anne’s name. Jo Anne served 14 years on the library’s board, 11 of those years as board president. She also served as one of the co-chairs of the Capital Campaign, which made the recent expansion a reality. Therefore, the board felt the addition of her name was appropriate and better honored the significant pledge.
Following the meeting, Jo Anne reacted to this news by sharing, “I want the community to know I am overwhelmed, honored and grateful. Having my name join Jeff’s on the library touches my heart. For over 44 years, we were a team supporting each other’s endeavors. This gesture means so much to me.”
A Library Celebration Day will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, where a public ribbon cutting will be accompanied by the unveiling of the new signs to celebrate the renaming of the library to the Jeffrey W. and Jo Anne R. Coy Public Library of Shippensburg.
“Jo Anne’s purpose with this pledge is to honor her husband of 44 years, Jeff Coy, who passed away on June 4, 2018,” library staff noted last month.
“Jeff was born here in Shippensburg, grew up in Shippensburg, attended college in Shippensburg and never left his hometown. From his early years to his final days, he played an active role in his community. He never forgot his roots,” Jo Anne said of the reason behind the pledge.
Please mark your calendars and share in this community event.
