It's time for the Shippensburg high school Class of 2016 to shine.

After four years together, the Greyhounds walked the stage Thursday to get their paws on their well-deserved diplomas.

Nearly half of the graduates were honor students with a GPA of 3.3 or above.

“The Class of 2016 is a special and unique class,” Principal Bruce Levy said of the 249 seniors.

Natalie Nye and Garret Cavanaugh earned the titles valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively.

The Shippensburg Senior High School Orchestra opened the evening with “Music for the Royal Fireworks,” and brought in graduates with the traditional “Pomp and Circumstance.”

Class President Chelsea Pyne addressed the audience with pride for her class.

“We are all part of this diversified class that has learned together over the years,” she said. “This is our time to shine.”

Senior Sharps and the Senior Class Chorus sang “I’ve Had the Time of My Life” and “Seasons of Love” for the audience of parents, siblings, relatives, friends and neighbors.

Student speakers Audrey Goates, Natalie Nye and Alan Tolbert recalled various achievements of their class, and encouraged their peers to succeed in their pursuits after graduation.

Goates plans to attend Brigham Young University for civil engineering.

“This has not been easy,” she said. “We are making decisions that shape the rest of our lives.”

Nye will attend Elizabethtown College for international business and Spanish.
She hopes her peers use their talents to the fullest, whether they become doctors, farmers or stay-at-home moms, she said.

“Oh, and if you do become famous, don’t forget your roots,” she quipped. “The school could use a new stadium.”

Tolbert wants to attend Temple University for trumpet performance.

“Do not live your life in fear of failure,” he said. “Make mistakes and learn.”

After the speeches, art teachers Christopher Martin and Aric Sites announced the graduates’ names while Principal Levy and School Board President Mark Buterbaugh handed out diplomas.

Class Vice President Noah Auman presented the class gift of water fountains with refill stations to the school and $1,000 to the Nurses’ Benevolent Fund.

After the ceremony, the graduates filed out of the Luhrs Center, leaving the microcosm of high school behind and moved on to the next chapter of their lives.
