This edition of Blast from the Past takes a look back at two very different news items…Operation Skywatch and the opening of Parr’s Sporting Goods.

When I came across the Operation Skywatch story on the front page of The News-Chronicle in the Tuesday, July 29, 1952, edition of the paper, I was immediately intrigued. The photo caught my eye first, and then I began reading. I had no idea there was a watch tower atop the former American Legion building on West King Street (currently home of Appalachian Brewing Co.).
